PDFs were designed to be unchangeable — that is their strength and their frustration. But modern browser technology has made PDF editing accessible to everyone, for free, without installing Adobe Acrobat or Microsoft Word.
What Can You Edit in a PDF?
Before diving in, it is important to understand what "editing" a PDF actually means:
- Add new content: Text boxes, images, shapes, signatures
- Annotate: Highlights, underlines, comments, sticky notes
- Redact: Whiteout or cover sensitive information
- Modify structure: Reorder, rotate, or delete pages
- Fill forms: Add text to form fields
Note: Editing existing text within a PDF is technically complex because PDFs store text as positioned glyphs, not editable paragraphs. Most free tools (including ours) focus on adding overlay content rather than modifying embedded text.

Real-World Editing Workflows
Scenario 1: Filling a Non-Interactive Form
Many PDF forms are not actually fillable — they are just images of forms. Use the Text tool to add text boxes over each field.
Scenario 2: Adding Comments to a Contract
Use the Text tool to add comment boxes in margins, or the Draw tool to underline and circle clauses.
Scenario 3: Signing a Document
Use the Signature tool to draw your signature, or upload a scanned signature image. Position over the signature line.
Scenario 4: Creating a Portfolio
Merge multiple PDFs, then use the Image tool to add cover images and the Text tool to add titles and descriptions.
Tips for Better Results
- Zoom in: Use browser zoom (Ctrl/Cmd + +) for precise placement
- Layer order: Newer elements appear on top of older ones
- Test print: Always print a test page before finalizing important documents
- Save iterations: Download versions as you go — browser refreshes will clear unsaved work
Limitations to Know
- Existing embedded text cannot be directly edited (this requires OCR or reconstruction)
- Complex vector graphics may not render perfectly in the editor preview
- Very large PDFs (100+ pages) may slow down the browser
